General Information
The Black Wyandottes are birds of good size, recognized for its excellent flesh properties and ability to lay eggs even during the cold winter months. They are also relatively resistant to diseases, easy to tame, and thus they do not cause many problems to their owners. Moreover, the Wyandotte hens are excellent broodies and make good mothers. They lay well and chicks tend to be strong and grow quickly. This breed also features great adaptability as they tolerate well both staying in confinement and living on free range farms. All these make them a wonderful multi-purpose breed which can be raised both for their large brown-shelled eggs and exquisite yellow-skinned meat. When you add all these factors together, it is hard to disagree that this breed is the best overall breeds of birds for poultry lovers. As far as their temperament is concerned, they are alert and active but generally docile and friendly. Both the full-size and bantam variants of the birds are great for family breeding, in which children also look after birds. Having all these in mind there is no wonder why they are a favourite breed among backyard flock owners.
Black Wyandotte – History
The Black Wyandotte is a well-known variety of Wyandotte, which is one of the thirteen breeds of American class recognized by the American Poultry Association. The true American Wyandotte breed of chickens originated from New York state and their beginnings date back to the early 1870s. The Black Wyandotte is a sport of both the Silver Laced and the Golden Laced varieties. The first black Wyandotte chickens were developed by F.J. Marshall and F.M. Clemens of Ohio, who started to breed the black flock in 1885. In 1893 this variant of Wyandotte birds was admitted to the Standard of Perfection of the American Poultry Association. However, they do not enjoy the same popularity in America as they do in Europe, especially in England, Belgium, Holland and Germany. In recent years, they have become a very popular show birds among the Germany breeders in particular.
Black Wyandotte – Characteristics
The birds belonging to this breed are rather long bodied, well balanced, fairly broad but with short back, and they have a prominent breast. Their medium sized wings are nicely folded to the sides which make them look very graceful. The other distinctive features of the Black Wyandotte are: a small, round head, decorated with a single, rose comb with a spike arranged along the neck line, a stout and well curved beak, and noticeable eyes. Their reddish ear-lobes are oblong and wattles are medium length. In general, their face is smooth and fine in texture. The cocks are marked by a broad and very prominent tail ending with a curled up sable feathers. It is worth noticing that the tail should be exactly of the same dimensions in every place, raised high, and at the highest point should not be higher than the eyes. The bird’s neck is medium in length and well arched with a full hackle. The general plumage colour of the Black Wyandotte is black, showing a beetle green sheen especially when seen in bright sunlight. The undercolour is dull black but sometimes white or grey. The same as other birds of the breed they have strong and clean legs. Their thighs are medium in length and well covered in soft and fluffy feathers. Their yellow shanks are also medium length and strong. However, they are free of feathers. The legs are ended with four straight and well spread toes.
Because of their plentiful plumage they might seem to be much heavier than they really are. The standard weights, in pounds are not less than 9 for cocks and not less than 7 for hens. There is also a miniature size of the Black Wyandotte Standard chicken. Like the Silver, White or Partridge, the Black bantam chickens make very good backyard birds too They have the same shape and colour as the larger varieties and are also good when it comes to egg production. The black bantam cocks’ standard weight is 30 ounces and hens weigh 26.
