Thinking whether Golden Laced Wyandotte chickens fit into your backyard?

Gold Wyandotte birds are one of the most charming and splashy species of the poultry world and one of the most well-known breeds all over the world. Popular as show birds due to their attractive feathering, this birds also serve great as a dual purpose breed, raised both for their large brown eggs and for their superb meat. They are well suited for living in confinement as well as outdoors ranging. As they are rather cold and heat hardy, they cope well with temperature extremes. As a backyard flock they are quite placid so they are well suited for a family with children. Moreover, their stunning plumage and easy-going nature make them great additions to any keeper’s coop.

An American breed with an Indian name

The Wyandotte is an American breed of chickens developed in the 1870s by four people, namely H. M. Doubleday, John Ray, L. Whittaker and Fred Houdlette. The breed was named after a Native American tribe once prevalent in the Eastern United States. The first type developed was the silver-laced variety. Then, in 1880 one of the Wisconsin breeders, Joseph McKeen, originated the Golden Laced Wyandotte. He crossed silver-laced hens with gold-spangled Hamburg and Partridge Cochin roosters. In 1888 the variety was admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection.

An excellent breed for egg production, cold-weather hardiness, and beauty

The Golden Laced Wyandotte is classed as a fairly large bird. An average male weighs around 8½ pounds and a female around 6.5 pounds. However, there is also a bantam variety which weighs an average of 3 lbs. to 3¾ lbs. The unique characteristic of the gold variety of Wyandotte chickens is their amazing plumage that makes them beautiful birds for exhibition. They have beautiful golden feathers with black edging, remarkably silky and closely distributed but not too abundant or fluffy. Breast and underparts are rich golden bay with a black and well defined, regular lacing, from the throat to back of the thighs. The neck is short, well curved and well furnished with abundant hackle feathers. Their rich golden head is rather short but broad with a rose-coloured comb, which follows the head gradually tapering towards the back and ends in a neat spike (leader). Their medium length wattles and ear-lobes are also deep, glorious red. Their beak is stout and well curved and they have prominent eyes which are reddish bay and deeply set. They have a broad, full breast and a medium length back. Their classic, rounded body is carried in a horizontal position. They are well balanced, as their quite long, shapely legs are squarely set under the centre of their body. Their legs and feet are classic yellow with four straight and well spread toes. The shank is medium in length, without feathering or fluff and the full hock can be seen. Their neck, shoulders, back and saddle are rich golden bay with black lacing. Tail and wings are primarily black with some golden bay highlights. The undercolour is slate, in males shading to red at the base. The body of a male, when viewed in profile, should be somewhat heart-shaped. The head and the tail should be about the same height, with the breast broad and full, and the tail standing erect, forming a broad U-shape.
